優勝という大きな目標を達成したことで選手のモチベーションが低下する、チームやファンからの高い期待値が逆にプレッシャーになる、プレーオフで勝ち進むために無理をしたせいで貯まった疲労／故障が翌年に響くなど複数の要因が複合的に影響したもの。

多くのスポーツで連続優勝が難しいと言われるのは、この「チャンピオンハングオーバー」の現象が関係していると言われている
